about

“Trance” is an original composition written in 2014 as an homage to Indian tabla master, Zakir Hussain. The form or raaga (the melodic framework for improvisation) consists of a total of 27 beats and is divided or counted this way: 7/4 + 7/4 + 7/4 + 6/4. Technically you could say this song is in 27/4 meter, but who’s counting? Originally written for GO SHLOMO (my duo project with keyboardist Adam Benjamin), I had fun exploring a variety of sounds, techniques and ideas on this track. There’s some vocal looping, a bit of beatboxing, a smidge of backwards tracking and of course, lots of drumming.
